1968- Take to the Streets

I found myself in a crowd of people against the glass window of the Haymarket Lounge at the hotel on the corner. The police walked into us, spraying Mace on everyone and clubbing people. I remember somebody shouting that a woman was having a heart attack. This was a big mass of humanity being crushed. And as the mass fell backwards, my back was to the window, and I could hear this glass breaking. And all of a sudden the whole window collapsed, and everybody fell into the bar, where delegates were sitting there drinking and talking as if this was routine for a political convention. The police came charging in after us, and there were people all over the place, bleeding, cut. They were just arresting anybody who looked like they didn’t belong in the hotel. I don’t know what happened, but I walked out. I don’t even know where I went.

JUST THE BEGINNING..

On Sept. 7, 2006, Nouriel Roubini, an economics professor at New York University, stood before an audience of economists at the International Monetary Fund and announced that a crisis was brewing. In the coming months and years, he warned, the United States was likely to face a once-in-a-lifetime housing bust, an oil shock, sharply declining consumer confidence and, ultimately, a deep recession. He laid out a bleak sequence of events: homeowners defaulting on mortgages, trillions of dollars of mortgage-backed securities unraveling worldwide and the global financial system shuddering to a halt. These developments, he went on, could cripple or destroy hedge funds, investment banks and other major financial institutions like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.....

Maryland - When the shooting stopped, two dogs lay dead. A mayor sat in his boxers, hands bound behind his back. His handcuffed mother-in-law was sprawled on the kitchen floor, lying beside the body of one of the family pets that police had killed before her eyes.

After the raid, Prince George's County police officials who burst into the home of Berwyn Heights' mayor last week seized the same unopened package of marijuana that an undercover officer had delivered an hour earlier.

Police claimed "Trinity was an innocent and random victim of identity theft. Apparently, so were four or five other county residents whose names and addresses were stolen and used as addresses on drug packages,"

John McCain denied a Republican colleague's claim that he roughed up an associate of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega on a diplomatic mission in 1987, saying the allegation was "simply not true.

However his comments did not square with Cochran's detailed recollection of the alleged incident...

"McCain was down at the end of the table and we were talking to the head of the guerrilla group here at this end of the table and I don't know what attracted my attention," Cochran said in an interview with The Sun Herald in Biloxi, Miss. "But I saw some kind of quick movement at the bottom of the table and I looked down there and John had reached over and grabbed this guy by the shirt collar and had snatched him up like he was throwing him up out of the chair to tell him what he thought about him or whatever ...

It could alert emergency officials if the same car or truck circles the Sears Tower three times or if nobody picks up a backpack in Grant Park for 30 seconds.

Community Urinalysis

Researchers have figured out how to give an entire community a drug test using just a teaspoon of wastewater from a city's sewer plant.

The test wouldn't be used to finger any single person as a drug user. But it would help federal law enforcement and other agencies track the spread of dangerous drugs, like methamphetamines, across the country.

In the study presented Tuesday, one teaspoon of untreated sewage water from each of the cities was tested for 15 different drugs. Field said researchers can't calculate how many people in a town are using drugs.

Manuel Noriega former dictator and drug king of Panama has served his time in federal prison just outside of Miami.

Originally intended to serve a sentence of 30 years, Noriega has been released on good behavior.

Today he is set to go back on trial to face France's request to extradite him on money laundering charges. He is also wanted in Panama for the death of two political figures.

Although the CIA had Manuel Noriega on the pay roll for a number of years to help American interests in Latin America he was captured after Bush Senior ordered a military invasion in 1989.

Noriega is now 72 years old, and is facing trial in the same courtroom where he was convicted of drug trafficking in 1992.

A good read...

On Borrowed Land

Editor's Letter
by Graydon Carter

It is an ongoing mystery to me why Republican administrations are such wretched protectors of our land, inasmuch as Republicans own so much of it. At present, the current administration may be the greatest impediment to correcting the world's environmental slide. From the moment he entered office, "the worst environmental president ever," in Bobby Kennedy Jr.'s estimation, began hacking away at three decades' worth of hard-fought protections for our air, water, and land. In the six subsequent years, the White House has rolled back some 400 environmental-protection laws. And in the 20 months he has left on the clock, President Bush is poised for more environmental backsliding. As Kennedy points out in "Texas Chainsaw Management," the president has so fully greased the revolving door between Washington and the oil, gas, and logging businesses that virtually every government agency having to do with the environment is now in the hands of men and women who used to work for, defend, or lobby for the very polluting industries their departments were established to police.

Heres the front and back of a T-Shirt given out during the Al-Sharpton

Tony Yayo and his G-Unit camp were marked men in New York City on Monday (april 2) as protesters took to the streets wearing "Ban 50" t-shirts and smashing G-Unit CDs.

In a press conference before the rally, Reverend Al Sharpton joined Czar Entertainment President Bryce Wilson and Cynthia Reed in an act of public grievance for an alleged assault on Reed's 14-year-old son by G-Unit's Tony Yayo. Along with other parents and community leaders, they issued a call to action to advocate against artists and industry executives who use violence to sell records.

Yayo (real name: Marvin Bernard) was arrested on March 24 and charged with harassment and endangering the welfare of a child (see "G-Unit's Tony Yayo Arrested For Allegedly Slapping Teen") in connection with an incident in which he allegedly attacked the 14-year-old son of Jimmy "Henchmen" Rosemond, who is The Game's manager and CEO of Czar Entertainment.

DIRT

"I was responsible for the 9/11 operation from A to Z," Mohammed said in a statement read during the session, which was held last Saturday.

Other plots he said he was responsible for included planned attacks against the Sears Tower in Chicago, the Empire State Building and New York Stock Exchange, the Panama Canal and Big Ben and Heathrow Airport in London—none of which happened.

He said he was involved in planning assassination attempts against former Presidents Carter and Clinton, attacks on U.S. nuclear power plants and suspension bridges in New York, the destruction of American and Israeli embassies in Asia and Australia, attacks on American naval vessels and oil tankers around the world, and an attempt to "destroy" an oil company he said was owned by former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger on Sumatra, Indonesia.

He also claimed he shared responsibility for assassination attempts against Pope John Paul II and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.

President Bush remains committed to progress on all fronts in the Gulf Region, and will discuss progress in education as well as other reconstruction efforts." The vice president left Kabul wearing a black suit and shiny dark cordovan cowboy boots - having just become the highest-level Bush administration official to have spent the night in a war zone - the unscheduled overnighter at Bagram Air Force Base. The vice president spoke on the record with the pool about the attack -- speaking, seated on a desk, in his Airstream, silver-skinned on the outside and leather-seated and wood-paneled on the inside, cabin set up inside the C-17 military cargo transport that had ferried him to Pakistan and Afghanistan and out as well.

"I was provided quarters overnight," he said of his Bagram stay. "It seems to me it was 10 occlock in the morning. I heard a loud boom... The Secret Service came in and told me there had been an attack on the main gate."

He was moved "for a brief period of time" to one of the base bomb shelters near his quarters, the VP said. "As the situation settled down and they had a better sense of what was going on, I went back to my room."

Doomsday

An asteroid may come uncomfortably close to Earth in 2036 and the United Nations should assume responsibility for a space mission to deflect it, a group of astronauts, engineers and scientists said on Saturday.

Astronomers are monitoring an asteroid named Apophis, which has a 1 in 45,000 chance of striking Earth on April 13, 2036.

Although the odds of an impact by this particular asteroid are low, a recent congressional mandate for NASA to upgrade its tracking of near-Earth asteroids is expected to uncover hundreds, if not thousands of threatening space rocks in the near future, former astronaut Rusty Schweickart said.
